Chair's report

In 1959, Queensland’s social workers established QCOSS as its peak body. 65 years later, QCOSS is still leading the movement for social change in Queensland by leveraging the sector’s knowledge of social issues, advocating to solve these issues, and striving with our sector towards excellence in service provision.

In 2024, QCOSS advocacy work has focused on the sustainability of our sector, cost-of-living, homelessness, youth justice, the needs of families with children, women’s equality and human rights.

Every week, QCOSS has put these issues into Queensland’s public conversation, including by using earned media.

Every week, QCOSS has walked the corridors of power to make sure the issues that matter most to Queenslanders and the community services sector are front of mind for policy makers.

And every week, QCOSS works with community service sector organisations to make sure they have the tools and training they need to tackle these issues head on for the benefit of Queenslanders.

This year, QCOSS has won early childhood reform, youth justice policy changes, cost-of-living relief for low-income families, fairer renting conditions, millions of dollars in funding for our sector and billions of dollars for social and affordable housing and homelessness services.

Day by day, week by week, QCOSS works with our members doing transformative work to make Queensland fairer and more equal.

In April, it was a great honour to be appointed as Queensland’s first Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Peak – fulfilling a key recommendation of the Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce Report Hear Her Voice 2 and as a result of years of tireless advocacy from Queensland’s DFV sector.

It’s an incredible privilege to serve the DFV sector, and I look forward to QCOSS working with the highly skilled and capable organisations that will help to bring an end to violence against women and children.

I would like to thank my board colleagues, who contribute their expertise, wisdom and experience to guiding QCOSS’ work in 2023-24.

I would also like to acknowledge the ongoing support of the Queensland Government, the Department of Communities, Housing and Digital Economy, and our many other partners and sponsors.

Finally, I thank the QCOSS members, a deeply engaged and committed group of organisations and people, who continue to inform and improve our work each year as we strive together toward our goal of equality, opportunity and wellbeing for all Queenslanders.
